Additional ServicesHome Buyer's and Seller's Guide to RadonThis guide was published by the EPA in 2006 and can be obtained in its entirety at the following address: http://www.epa.gov/radon/pubs/hmbyguid.html.
Radon is a radioactive gas that comes from the natural breakdown of uranium in soil, rock, and water, and gets into the air you breathe. In 2005 the U.S. Surgeon General issued this health advisory: "Indoor radon is the second-leading cause of lung cancer in the United States and breathing it over prolonged periods can present a significant health risk to families all over the country. It's important to know that this threat is completely preventable. Radon can be detected with a simple test and fixed through well-established venting techniques."
Two basic methods are used for in-home testing. The first utilizes "passive" devices such as charcoal canisters which are set out for a period of time and then sent to a lab for analysis. The second and more accurate method utilizes "active" devices which monitor the radon gas level over a period of 48 hours and then produce an immediate printout showing hour-by-hour radon levels and an overall average.
